QUESTION TWO - Could war in the Asia Pacific be avoided? (aka Causes of World War II in Asia Pacific)

- Protectionism
- Japan’s foreign policy, 1931-1941
- Failure of the League of Nations in the 1930s

In order to form an opinion, you definitely need KNOWLEDGE pertaining to these two significant events in history.

The following resources / website links ENABLE you to ACQUIRE the KNOWLEDGE you need to have before you can begin to argue, for instance, that World War Two was caused more by the foreign policy of Hitler than by the appeasement policy of Britain and France. Of course, to ensure ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE does take place, you need to

1. ACCESS these resources,
2. READ
3. COMPREHEND
4. CLARIFY DOUBTS

Once you have completed the steps listed above, you should be more than capable to respond to the TWO QUESTIONS which is the FOCUS of TODAY's Lesson.

RESOURCES / LINKS YOU MUST ACCESS for ACQUISITION OF KNOWLEDGE
1. http://www.sulaimanyusof.com/history.htm (Please go directly to the relevant sections 'War in Europe' and 'War in Pacific' to view the powerpoint presentations and notes to enhance your understanding of these two events.)

2. http://www.johndclare.net/ (This is a very useful website for History students. For today's lesson, only click onto 'Road to WWII. You might spend the next 30 minutes here and loving every minute of it! There are many useful sources and perspectives being shared here!)

3. Check Either YOUR PERSONAL EMAIL or THE CLASS EMAIL at historianspeaking@yahoo.com.sg to download the various resources for studying to further enhance your understanding.

** TO SHOWCASE YOUR ABILITY in PROVIDING INTELLIGENT JUDGEMENTS and EXPLANATIONS based on THE TWO RHETORICAL HISTORY QUESTIONS, YOU will complete TWO TASKS

1. 'LEAVE A COMMENT' - Explain why you agree and disagree that war could have been avoided in Europe and in Asia Pacific. (should complete this task before the Class Test next week.)

War in europe culd be avoided if british and france had stop germany from reamament. They are foolish to think that war could be avoided and hiter would stop expanding his strengths by giving in to his demands.

War in asia pacific could be avoided if the westerns have not understimated Japan as it was not self- sufficient and does not dare to make enenmies with Japan as they need Japan to keep USSR out of China. They should not have one-sided thinking that they could control Japanese expansionism without resorting to war or even sanctions which would bring about the loss of profitable trade.

Explain why you agree and disagree that war could have been avoided in Europe and in Asia Pacific.

I agree to a small extent that war in Europe could have been avoided because it might not have happened if there was no existence of Hitler.

And I disagree to a large extent as again, because of Hitler. Hitler was a man who had a strong desire to overpower mankind thus even if Britain and France gave in to him (the appeasement policy), he would still think of other ways to get to the top..there was no stopping him in this sense. Therefore, it was almost impossible not to have war in Europe.

I agree to a small extent that war could be avoided in Europe if not for Hitler as majority of the European countries wanted the common goal of a United and Greater Europe.

I disagree to a large extent that war could be avoided in Europe as Hitler had a very aggressive foreign policy. He wanted to clear Europe of communism and non-Aryan people deemed impure in his eyes. His beliefs led him to conquer Europe to provide resources and land for his people. Therefore, war could not be avoided unless the European countries surrendered to Germany willingly.

Background Information found on the Nazis through a book borrowed from our school library
As there is a lot of information, i will divide them into different comments.

The Reichstag fire
Hitler had exploited the fire to the Nazis' advantage by passing a decree which suspended many civil rights and arrested communists and undermined their election campaign (which was a few days later)
The culprit , a young Dutchman was acquitted altogether in 1980 although an investigation concluded that he acted alone.

The Munich Beer Hall Putsch

The famous putsch done by Hitler that led to his sentence in jail, given the minimum treatment of 5 years but only served 9 months. That showed the right-wing sympathy of the courts towards him. Hitler took this 9 months to write his autobiography ( Mein Kampf ) which had long words and endless repetitions, intended to give the impression of an educated and intellectual man but made it a dull read and a failure as a political bestseller. His jail stint was a good one with comfortable surroundings.

The three pieces of information was modified and extracted from the book: Germany 1858-1990 Hope, Terror, and Revival by Alison Kitson

And an edit for the Munich Beer Hall Putsch would be to add my name.
